Why is it not allowed to set a DNS wildcard?

Hi folks,

trying to set up a wildcard DNS A record *.domain.tld A 123.123.123.123, however hestia shows me this error:
Error: invalid value :: *

Why is that? It’s common to use * as a wildcard symbol for DNS records.
