501 <postmaster@[ipadress]>: domain literals not allowed

Hello everyone. My email is being rejected by the recipient’s mail server.

How can I create the email address postmaster@[ipadress]?

Results for checks

The SMTP server does not accept mails to postmaster@[IP_ADDRESS]. This is a very bad thing, as this address is used by people that don't know your domain name! The reported error is:

501 <postmaster@[ipadress]>: domain literals not allowed

Technically you can but I doubt any mail server out there will accept mail from that email address.

Why you don’t use a domain? If you don’t want or you can’t pay for a domain, there are free domains (.TK, .ML, .GA, .CF, .GQ) out there: https://www.freenom.com

Don’t use freenom…

Freenom shuts down 12.6 million domains — report - Domain Incite.

Thanks for the heads up… I had no idea about Freenom’s situation.

I am using a domain.tld. However, since my emails were being rejected, I checked my domain.

The test produced the result mentioned above

I have now activated postmaster@mydomain and abuse@mydomain.

What you have done is more than enough. Having postmaster and abuse for your domain should be sufficient. Although mail servers should accept literal domains [ipaddress], in practice almost none of them do.

Moreover, if someone wants to report abuse, they either send it directly to [email protected] (example.com is your domain), to postmaster@yourmailhostname or to the abuse address from the whois of your IP.

Unfortunately, my sent emails are being rejected by gmx and ionos (other providers are not yet known).

What can I do???

Check the reason for the rejection from the Exim’s log: /var/log/exim4/mainlog

Thanks for the info. SMTP wasn’t working. I’ve started it now and my mail is no longer rejected. Now I just have to wait and see if it has arrived…-))
