Clamav found virus/trojan in the email folder

I performed a manually scan with clamav to check the folders for viruses and the result was viruses found in the home/user/mail folder. Since clamav detects them shouldn’t it block them in the first place before they are stored in the email folder?
Now what is the best way to deal with it? run the command “clamscan -r --remove /home/user/mail/” or do something else?

Thanks
