Fail2ban won't start after running this script

Hey,

I wanted to install FTP after having already installed hestiacp and I found this script: Can I install FTP after the HestiaCP installation? - #4 by sahsanu

The thing is that, it didn’t installed ftp and now fail2ban won’t start :frowning:

Is there a way to resolve that please?

Thanks!

The script gave any error?

Show the output of these commands:

dpkg -l | grep -E '^ii.*vsftpd'
systemctl status vsftpd --no-pager -l
systemctl status fail2ban --no-pager -l
cat /etc/fail2ban/jail.local
v-list-sys-config json | grep FTP | sed -E 's/^\s*//'

The script didn’t give any error

dpkg -l | grep -E ‘^ii.*vsftpd’

 dpkg -l | grep -E '^ii.*vsftpd'

# MISCELLANEOUS OPTIONS
#

# "bantime.increment" allows to use database for searching of previously banned ip's to increase a
# default ban time using special formula, default it is banTime * 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32...
#bantime.increment = true

# "bantime.rndtime" is the max number of seconds using for mixing with random time
# to prevent "clever" botnets calculate exact time IP can be unbanned again:

# "bantime.maxtime" is the max number of seconds using the ban time can reach (doesn't grow further)
#bantime.maxtime =

# "bantime.factor" is a coefficient to calculate exponent growing of the formula or common multiplier,
# default value of factor is 1 and with default value of formula, the ban time
# grows by 1, 2, 4, 8, 16 ...
#bantime.factor = 1

# more aggressive example of formula has the same values only for factor "2.0 / 2.885385" :
#bantime.formula = ban.Time * math.exp(float(ban.Count+1)*banFactor)/math.exp(1*banFactor)

# "bantime.multipliers" used to calculate next value of ban time instead of formula, coresponding
# previously ban count and given "bantime.factor" (for multipliers default is 1);
# following example grows ban time by 1, 2, 4, 8, 16 ... and if last ban count greater as multipliers count,
# always used last multiplier (64 in example), for factor '1' and original ban time 600 - 10.6 hours
#bantime.multipliers = 1 2 4 8 16 32 64
# following example can be used for small initial ban time (bantime=60) - it grows more aggressive at begin,
# for bantime=60 the multipliers are minutes and equal: 1 min, 5 min, 30 min, 1 hour, 5 hour, 12 hour, 1 day, 2 day

Execute this command and check if you see vsftpd in Hestia:

v-change-sys-config-value FTP_SYSTEM ‘vsftpd’ → This command returns nothing

Where is the right jail.local conf? Did you do something?

ls -la /etc/fail2ban/

It shouldn’t return anything, now check whether you see vsftpd service in Hestia… or run this command:

 v-list-sys-services

or

 v-list-sys-services | grep vsftpd

ls -la /etc/fail2ban/

I’m not very technical but it seems to really be that file, otherwise I didn’t do anything, no haha

v-list-sys-services

v-list-sys-services | grep vsftpd

vsftpd      running  0      1    72

Ok, Hestia now can see vsftpd service.

To solve the jail.local issue.

cp /usr/local/hestia/install/deb/fail2ban/jail.local /etc/fail2ban/jail.local
systemctl restart fail2ban
systemctl status fail2ban --no-pager -l

Woaw!!! Thank youuu so much it works!!!

You are welcome :wink:

Just for the records, the script you executed didn’t cause the problem, you had the problem before executing the script :stuck_out_tongue:

Also, if you want to enable fail2ban for vsftp you should edit the file /etc/fail2ban/jail.local and modify enable = false to true for vsfptd-iptables

Before:

[vsftpd-iptables]
enabled  = false
filter   = vsftpd
action   = hestia[name=FTP]
logpath  = /var/log/vsftpd.log
maxretry = 5

After:

[vsftpd-iptables]
enabled  = true
filter   = vsftpd
action   = hestia[name=FTP]
logpath  = /var/log/vsftpd.log
maxretry = 5

Save the file and restart again fail2ban.

systemctl restart fail2ban

Ohhhh, okayy, I’m happy at least I’ve been able to see it thanks to the script hahaha

Thanks I did it :smiley:
