Getting prepared to transistion to Debian LTS

So Debian 12 Security Support end in 2 weeks on 10 Jun 2026 . After that date security is being provided by Debian LTS, which is a separate group of volunteers and companies interested in making it a success.

I am thinking the transition will happen automatically as long as your sources.list is correct

However dont we need to be sure that the installed packages are supported by LTS ?

apt-get install debian-security-support
check-support-status

In my case there are 2 unsupported packages

  • Source:intel-mediasdk, ended on 2024-11-21 at version 22.5.4-1
Details: abandoned upstream, upstream does not publish enough information to fix issues.
    Affected binary package:
    • libmfx1:amd64 (installed version: 22.5.4-1)
  • Source:binutils
Details: Only suitable for trusted content; see I Challenge Thee

libmfx is intel graphics related which could probably be removed . But it does look like ffmpeg relies on it though. Does hestia utilize ffmpeg ?

binutils isnt getting any support but apparently its been like that for a long time. Looks like you cant compile a kernel, at least the dkms way, without it. Gotta have my ZFS

So is everyone reviewing the packages on their Debian installs of hestia and getting ready for LTS ?

What am i forgetting to do or what else do i need to do ?

Debian LTS support will run for 2 more years.

thanks

Yes, that’s certainly sad. I hope there will be support for Debian 13 soon. But with proper configuration, it will work well and safely on Debian 12.
