Simplemachines forum setup

Hello all,

ive been using hestia for about 2 years now, run about 6 sites off linux box 22.04, working perfectly alongside csf firewall.

One thing is i havent got going, is one site iam running simplemachines forum, which either uses php or smtpd as the mail option. i have no idea how to make it work with exim4 which hestia uses. some say i can configure exim4 to accept smtpd requests. so if anyone else runs simplemachines forums and solved this please id like to hear how its done. thank you! and happy holidays

Hi @blackturbo

I don’t really know Simple Machines Forum, but what error do you get when setting up SMTP? Can you post a screenshot of the SMTP config fields in SMF??

its very basic questions. i copy and pasted

Mail type (you can choose smtp or php default)

SMTP server

SMTP port

SMTP username

SMTP password

so iam wondering if i go into hestia’s main cp and make an email account, then use those crediantials in smf, it will use that email address to send and recieve mail in smf, smf uses external email like for lost password resets and new user verfification.

Yes, add a mail account for your forum and use it.

Regarding smtp server and port, if you want to use SSL prefix the smtp server (it should be mail.yourdomain) with ssl:// and port 465, if you want to use STARTTLS prefix the smtp server with tls:// and port 587.

Also don’t know simplemachines, but did you try host=localhost, port=25, no user, no password.
I think the From address would have to be from one of the mail domains hosted on that server.

well i never solved it, i took the more easier way out and just went with a smtp relay thanks for all the help!
