Long-Term Stability and Migration Options for HestiaCP-Based DNS Infrastructure

Hi everyone,

I’m currently setting up my infrastructure using HestiaCP, including running my own authoritative DNS server with custom nameservers (e.g., ns1.example.com). So far, I really like the flexibility Hestia offers.

Before fully committing, I would like to ask the community:

  • How stable and reliable is HestiaCP in the long run?

  • How confident are you that HestiaCP will still be maintained and usable in 5 or even 10 years?

  • If the project were to change direction or become unmaintained, what options would I have for migrating away from HestiaCP – especially regarding DNS zone data and email/web configuration?

I’m looking for a solution I can rely on long-term, but I also want to ensure that I’m not locked in and could move to another system (e.g., raw BIND, PowerDNS, or even managed DNS providers) without major headaches if needed.

Thanks in advance for your insights and experiences!

Best regards

Hola. Welcome mate. Let me respond to the specific queries.

Any project (be it oss or proprietary), always is stable as well as has bugs, it is technology. You can never be too sure. But I can very well say HCP is very stable, and reliable as well. I am using it for around 15+ months now on my own server, and the only issues I have seen are either due to the lack of my knowledge, or the lack of knowing how certain things work in the real world. Even for those I have always received assistance here on the forum, on HCP’s git, or even outside of this forum. So, I can very well put forth: I am satisfied and will remain with HCP for my long run.

One can never say for any company for sure. Who knows, whether I myself will remain with HCP? So it goes both ways. Also, donations for open source takes it a long way, along with support and adding/giving time to development from individuals. I am very much sure that for the next 5 years at least, HCP will not go anywhere. Also, it is OSS, so even if it goes south, I am sure the world will pick up and it will get forked. Not stating anything beyond daily representative runs here.

You will always have options to migrate. The HCP has and will always support the logic for anyone to move out and migrate in to. I will suggest go through the CLI/API docs along with the full docs of HCP. They are flexible and have various options. I myself migrated in from cPanel and have also used various DNS options (on trial basis) on HCP.

Honestly, you can very well run your own company/reselling etc for a long term for sure.

I’ve been using VestaCP and Now HestiaCP since I think 2016? I wouldn’t have it ANY other way.

I DO KNOW that we ALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL should try to donate money to the organization to make it MOAR viable, long-term.

Now, I’m not affiliated with the company. I’m not authorized to say stuff like that. But I’m going to try to start donating SOME money in the near future.

Thank you very much for your detailed response – I really appreciate it.

I’m genuinely glad to hear that you’ve had such a stable and positive long-term experience with HestiaCP. I’m currently testing it myself and so far, I’m very satisfied with the overall structure, performance, and usability.

I’ll definitely try to contribute to the community where I can.

To be honest, my past experiences with support in forums for other tools like Graylog, Zammad, HPE/Aruba, and other so-called “professional” platforms have often been frustrating – sometimes the community is inactive, and in some cases, responses are either dismissive or not helpful at all.

So I’m really happy to see that things seem to be different here. Looking forward to being part of it!
